Where is the sexual energy in San Francisco? I am frustrated. I have recently come back from Rio, which is perhaps the sexiest place on the planet, and now I feel like I am living in a sexless universe. I am not talking about hoochie mamas dressed like Janet Jackson at the SuperBowl or random hookups or even on-the-street-make-out-sessions, though those are nice and there are plenty of those to see while you drive around Rio. I am talking about a sexual energy crisis.

Canvassing In Reno, One Fascinating Interaction After Another
Even though this is a QUIRKYALONE blog and not a political blog, I want to share with you my experiences this past weekend canvassing voters in Reno for the Obama campaign. Community organizing is part of who I am–it’s why this website exists. And right now my passion for community organizing is being channeled into the Obama campaign. So if you want to read about the fascinating interactions I had with voters in Reno, Nevada, 11 days away from the election, read on.

I Am My Own Hero
Last Friday night I had the pleasure of wandering around one of San Francisco’s artist studios, opened up to the public for our annual Open Studios. (Artists invite the public to come check out their work and where they make it.)
I stumbled upon this extremely quirkyalone portrait as part of an exhibition called “What Women Want” and had to snap it with my new Iphone to share with you. Oooh, I am giddy with the camera feature on my new phone! Check out more of the artist’s work–and the poem on the subject’s back–at camillanewhagen.com.
Quirkyalone.net Endorses
We don’t ordinarily choose sides in any election. But this year I’m going to risk the enraged emails from libertarians, Republicans, and Green Party members, and come out strong for the Democratic Obama-Biden ticket.
Never before has it been so exciting to vote for a Democratic candidate: a writer who may not agree with us all issues, but who is always thoughtful and, as Colin Powell put it, has an intellectual vigor that is fitting and most needed for our times. Never before has it been so terrifying to imagine a vice-presidential candidate as president. Don’t think for a second that Sarah Palin wouldn’t make fun of quirkyalone community organizers if she knew about us!
No matter what the polls say, we don’t know how people will vote Nov. 4. So get out there and vote and protect our right to live in a country where it’s okay to different. Even quirky. No one asked the candidates about quirkyness or quirkyaloneness at the debates, but I have a strong suspicion that Obama would be more supportive. He was, after all, raised by a single mother.

What It Feels Like to Travel Alone in Brazil
I have a long post saved up inside of me that I haven’t written, probably because the topic felt so overwhelming I didn’t know where to start. I have wanted to travel for several years. The desire was stored up inside me while work took center stage. For years, I was singularly focused on work, whether it was Quirkyalone, my other book and magazine To-Do List, and my street fashion community website stylemob.com. At long last I decided to take the leap, but to be honest, I was petrified. Petrified and elated.
